The challenge of finding a way to enjoy the landscape while minimizing the impact of development is a crucial issue of our times. I advise you on a practical and responsible approach to your use of land or city lot.
Often, the first drawing is a "thumbnail sketch" showing the cardinal directions, where best views are, where vehicles will arrive, and where utilities must be planned for. This "thumbnail" shows all desired rooms/spaces, drawn roughly to scale and their optimal relationship to each other and to the landscape. Should the bedrooms or kitchen bask in early morning light? Where is the best spot to catch the sunset? Where can a patio be located so it takes in the sweeping view yet isn't blasted by the sun or blown away by the wind? So much can be learned at this stage, and if the thinking is right and the site amenable, all the puzzel pieces fall into place.
The thumbnail is then refined, showing how the building fits within the topography, and the realities of access, parking, turnarounds, and utilities. Here is an almost-complete design, showing two alternates on the driveway and a third drawing showing an initial concept for an estate including greenhouse, shop, and courtyards.
