Porch Conversion

Like many turn-of-the-century foursquares, this home had a small kitchen in back.  Previous owners had shoehorned a large laminate topped island, which overwhelmed the space and detracted from the vintage charm of adjacent rooms.  A cabinet filled in an original doorway, blocking views into the family room.

My design swapped out the island for a wood breakfast table, opened the doorway, and converted the screen porch into a sunny nook where children can play while parents cook.  The stove moved over; away from the wall, and cubbies were built under a salvaged transom window.  The owner chose new appliances, an apron sink, concrete countertops with recycled glass chips, and a green checkered linoleum floor.

Built by Tim Marr, after photos by Ben Russell; both men from Mineral Point.
