On top of a hill nearby is a new barn for a new type of country living. I began with the idea of a "bank barn", with one long side of the rock veneer foundation buried into the slope. The exposed side would have four vehicle bays, with a central door leading upstairs to a finished space divided by halves.
One one side, a woodworking shop with separate "finish room" where varnish could dry dust-free. On the other, an apartment for weekend living and someday guest quarters once the owners built their permanent home a stone's throw away. A custom kit-of-parts greenhouse provides a place to start seedlings for the garden.
I'm pleased with how well the proportions of this building turned out, especially the 30" square cupola atop the roof. The contractor was Rick Hanson, of Arena, Wisconsin.
