Mineral Point is famous for its mid-19th century rock buildings. This classic example on Commerce Street was for many years a popular restaurant (the Chesterfield), but with limited seating. New owners decided to expand with a wood framed addition, which would sit lower than the original, preserving its prominence as the main building. They called it Mineral Spirits, and it was a lively place. It is now Cafe Four. The pizza is outstanding.
My design solution is a Greek Revival styled exterior, popular through the late 1800’s. Elements of this style include a stone foundation capped by a wide mudsill (bandboard) and clearstory windows set in a band under the roof overhang. Evenly spaced double hung windows of similar proportion continue the rhythm of the original. The inset entryway, with engaged columns, is a classic feature.
