We are lucky to have an art school in Mineral Point, a place that inspires creativity and community spirit. Shake Rag Center for the Arts is tucked into a small ravine scattered with vintage buildings including a blacksmithy and an old schoolhouse. Up on the highway adjacent to the quaint campus stood a World War II surplus Quonset Hut, most recently an auto parts store.
When aquired by Shake Rag, many were skeptical this raw industrial building would be able to contribute to the rustic vibe asssociated with the School....their annual Woodlander's Gathering. Working closely with the Building Committee, I proposed a "Highway 66" theme, celebrating the post-war architecture of 1950's highway architecture. Bold forms, bright colors, and a sense of fun transformed what was ho-hum into an inviting space for large classes and other gatherings. Craft materials can be spread out, and with sunlight flooding from the large south-facing windows, there's no shortage of inspiration.
Construction Documents were completed by Schmit Engineering of Dodgeville, and funds for building completion came from the John and Carla Lind family.
