Once my client and I have sussed out how big & other must-haves, it's time to apply architectural form to function. Here are 4 very quick sketches of how a 24' x 24' studio could look. The style is "Carpenter Gothic", to match the adjacent house designed a few years earlier.
Scheme A is a cross-gable. Scheme B has a windowed cupola to bring light down into the center. Scheme C offers even more sky light, with a band of clearstory windows. Scheme D is more modest, with a simple finial or vintage lightening rod.
I like to spark ideas by looking at photos. When I found this one of a vintage carriage house, I just had to try a diamond window in the gable end. My client liked it, too!
