A Good Place for Children

Designed for a growing family with young children, this large addition and remodeling project completely transformed how space was used.  The kitchen became a master bath, the living room became the master bedroom, and the bathroom became the foyer.  The addition ceiling soars to the roofline, with space for a play loft above the kitchen.  You get to it from the stair landing leading up to the children's bedrooms.

Below, a rec room with more toys is well lit by high windows set into the foundation wall.  Large windows in the living/dining area overlook a gravel courtyard and in facing south, were likely to cause summertime overheating and glare.  Instead of extending the roof eaves (short, to match the original house), I positioned a canopy, supported by brackets, to shade the patio doors.

The interior combines crisp white walls, trim, and windows with exposed salvaged wood floor joists and a barn style door.  "Hog wire" fencing provides a sturdy guardrail at the loft.
